Yoga for those with a Cancer Diagnosis: Tyla Arnason

Gain an introduction and understanding of the most common types of cancer, treatments and their side effects as well as common complications seen in recovery. Teaching Yoga for those with Heart and Lung Ailments: Trish Robbins

Learn class plans that relieve symptoms associated with a variety of ailments related to heart and lungs. Both are in the chest area and thus treated similarly. A variety of medical disorders and their treatment will be discussed. Dean Ornish’s early study on reversing heart disease will be discussed as well as it’s implications in paving the way for Yoga Therapy. Learn how the use of props can accommodate the individual, easing discomfort, reducing symptoms and creating space in the troubled areas.

Prana’ is the subtle energy within breath and ‘yama’ is it’s controlled direction into the body. Pranayama is an effective healing modality on it’s own. However, sometimes this addiction disrupts our lives and causes compromised health and happiness. This learning module contains an asana sequence as taught by Father Joseph Pereira of the Kripa Foundation. Learn about the common types of autoimmune disease and the symptoms experienced by those living with these conditions. Gain an understanding of how these conditions interact, the challenges of properly diagnosing autoimmune disease, their treatment protocols, and the complications that can occur from treatment. You will walk away from this session with a basic yet solid understanding for how to help those living with autoimmune disease. Your newly acquired toolset with include appropriate poses, contraindications, modifications, prop use, and the use of breath work and meditation as part of a standard therapy program. More than a mouthful, these practices are hand gestures and muscle locks done while seated and doing pranayama (yogic breathing exercises). Learning how to stimulate different parts of the body and mind affect the flow of prana (life force) in the body. This refined yoga practice works with the subtle nadis ( chakras) in the body to bring profound wellness.

People come to yoga to recover from injury and pain, and most of us experience pain in yoga asana practices at one time or another. Pain is a complex human experience, and yoga teachers must have a deep understanding of it in order to know how to respond when a student states that they have pain during yoga. This module explores pain from a yogic and biological perspective, allowing us to respond with greater wisdom when we experience ‘body’ pain.

Continuation of morning module. Neil Pearson PT, MSc, BA-BPHE, CYT, RYT500 is a Clinical Assistant Professor at UBC, and the first physical therapist recipient of the Excellence in Inter-Professional Pain Education Award from the Canadian Pain Society. He is a Board member of Pain BC, founding Chair of the Canadian Physiotherapy Pain Science Division, a physiotherapist, yoga therapist and creator of Pain Care Yoga Certification. In his practice, Neil works exclusively with people in pain. He teaches health care professionals and yoga teachers to do the same, taking every opportunity to integrate their training with our most insightful teachers – those living in pain.
